What are the main functions of hydraulic oil?
The specific functions of hydraulic oil are to:
- transmit pressure and force
- reduce friction and wear
- dissipate heat
- remove contaminants and wear particles
- protect against rust and corrosion
Why are there hydraulic oils without zinc?
Zinc-free hydraulic oils to which phosphorus sulphur has been added are intended for systems with very high filtering requirements. These oils are less susceptible to hydrolysis(in the presence of water) and have good demulsification and airing characteristics. Modern systems increasingly use servo valves and therefore require very fine filters and oils to which phosphorus sulphur has been added.
Can ISO 46 oil be replaced with IS0 68 oil, if required by the manufacturer?
The oil viscosity prescribed by the manufacturer must be followed. In exceptional cases, for example an urgent refill or leak that could cause production stoppage, oil with a different viscosity can be used, but the viscosity of the replacement oil must be higher.
Can Q8Oils Handel be used instead of Q8Oils Haydn to reduce the number of oils used?
Q8Oils Haydn cannot always be replaced with Q8Oils Handel, because some hydraulic systems contain pumps and other components with sharp edges that can ‘shear’ the oil and break the Viscosity Improver into small pieces, thereby decreasing the oil viscosity. Before substituting these oils, always contact Q8Oils’ Technical Helpdesk or consult your manufacturer.
What is the difference between Q8Oils Haydn and Q8Oils Handel?
Similar to engine oils, there is a mono-grade version and a multi-grade version for hydraulic oils. Q8Oils Handel is a Q8Oils Haydn to which a Viscosity Improver has been added, enabling it to be used with variable ambient temperature.
Can Q8Oils Handel 46 be used in a Caterpillar, instead of engine oil?
No. Caterpillar does not permit the use of multi-grade hydraulic oil in the hydraulic system, owing to ‘shearing’, i.e. a reduction in viscosity resulting from mechanical shearing forces.
Can Q8Oils’ TO4-Fluid also be used in the hydraulic system?
Yes, it is highly suitable as a hydraulic fluid, but it costs much more than a conventional hydraulic oil.
